
RCD Versus RCBO: Which Suits Your Home?

A consumer unit upgrade is rarely just about replacing an ageing box on the wall. It is an opportunity to improve electrical safety, reduce disruption from faults and prepare the property for modern demands. When considering RCD versus RCBO, the key difference is how much of your home is affected when a fault occurs - a detail that matters greatly in a connected, security-conscious household.
Both devices provide vital additional protection against electric shock, but they do it in different ways. The right choice depends on the age and layout of the installation, the number of circuits, planned improvements and the level of continuity you expect from your home’s electrical and smart technology systems.
What an RCD does
An RCD, or residual current device, monitors the electricity flowing through a circuit. Under normal conditions, the current flowing out through the live conductor should match the current returning through the neutral. If it detects an imbalance, such as current finding an unintended path to earth, it disconnects the supply very quickly.
This can help protect people from serious electric shock and can reduce the risk associated with certain electrical faults. In a domestic consumer unit, an RCD commonly protects a group of circuits rather than just one. For example, a single RCD may cover several socket, lighting or appliance circuits.
An RCD does not replace the overcurrent protection provided by an MCB, or miniature circuit breaker. The MCB is designed to respond to overloads and short circuits, while the RCD responds to earth leakage. These are different fault conditions, so both forms of protection are needed.
The limitation of shared RCD protection
Where multiple circuits sit behind one RCD, a fault on one circuit can switch off everything protected by it. A faulty outdoor light fitting, a damp appliance or an issue on a garden circuit could therefore take out internal lighting, sockets or other services connected to the same RCD.
For some homes, this arrangement remains practical and compliant when correctly designed. However, it is less convenient when reliable power is essential for workspaces, refrigeration, home networking, heating controls, security equipment or smart home hubs. Finding the source of a trip can also be more time-consuming because several circuits are affected at once.
RCD versus RCBO: the practical difference
An RCBO combines the functions of an RCD and an MCB within one device. Rather than protecting a group of circuits, an RCBO is installed on an individual circuit. It provides protection against earth leakage, overload and short circuit faults for that circuit alone.
The benefit is selective isolation. If a fault develops on the dishwasher circuit, for instance, the rest of the property can remain powered. Your lighting, internet equipment and other circuits are far less likely to be interrupted simply because one appliance or cable has developed a problem.
This does not mean an RCBO prevents every inconvenience. Any circuit with a fault will still disconnect, as it should. The difference is that the issue is contained, making the fault easier to identify and limiting the impact on the household.
For a modern home, that added resilience is often compelling. Consider a property with electric vehicle charging, garden power, underfloor heating controls, CCTV, electric gates, a home office and integrated lighting. Separating protection by circuit helps preserve essential functions while a single fault is investigated and rectified.
Why RCBOs are often chosen for consumer unit upgrades
RCBO-equipped consumer units are widely selected for full replacements and substantial refurbishments because they offer a more refined level of circuit protection. They support a tidy, logical installation where each circuit has its own dedicated device and can be clearly identified.
They are particularly well suited to households investing in enhanced living experiences through intelligent technology. Smart homes depend on a quiet background of reliable infrastructure. If a minor fault on an external circuit shuts down the router, automation processor or security recording equipment, the technology may be working exactly as installed but the overall experience will feel compromised.
Individual RCBO protection can help minimise this risk. A professional design may also consider how circuits are arranged so critical equipment is sensibly separated. This could include dedicated circuits for a network rack, security systems, an electric gate supply, refrigeration, audiovisual equipment or a home office. The aim is not to overcomplicate the installation, but to create a dependable electrical foundation for the way the property is used.
There are trade-offs. An RCBO arrangement may require a suitable consumer unit, careful circuit design and additional installation time compared with simpler shared-RCD protection. The existing wiring must also be assessed properly. A consumer unit should never be specified solely by the number of ways available or by adding the newest devices to an untested installation.
When an RCD arrangement may still be appropriate
RCD protection is not outdated or inherently inferior. In the right setting, a consumer unit using RCDs and MCBs can provide effective protection. The most appropriate configuration depends on the electrical installation as a whole, not a single product choice.
A smaller property with straightforward circuits and limited demand may not require the same degree of separation as a larger renovation or smart home project. Likewise, an existing board may be suitable for targeted work where a full replacement is neither necessary nor proportionate.
The decision should account for the condition of cables and accessories, the presence of borrowed neutrals, the likely load on circuits, outdoor supplies and any planned additions. An electrical installation condition report may be advisable where the age or condition of the installation is uncertain. It can reveal issues that should be addressed before a new consumer unit is fitted.
Choosing the right protection for modern equipment
Not all RCD and RCBO devices have identical characteristics. The type selected must suit the circuits and equipment being installed. Modern homes can include induction hobs, EV chargers, heat pumps, solar equipment, LED drivers and electronic power supplies, all of which may influence the protection design.
A qualified electrician will assess the manufacturer’s requirements and the relevant electrical standards before selecting protective devices. This matters because the wrong device type may lead to unwanted tripping or, more seriously, fail to provide the intended level of protection under certain fault conditions.
For properties with smart home systems, this assessment should happen early in the project. Electrical circuits, data infrastructure, lighting control panels and equipment locations all need to work together. Planning them as one coordinated installation produces a cleaner finish and makes future servicing more straightforward.
Testing is part of the safety system
Whether your property uses RCDs or RCBOs, these devices need routine testing. Most have a clearly marked test button. Pressing it should cause the device to trip, demonstrating that its mechanical test function operates. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance and arrange professional advice if a device does not trip, will not reset or trips repeatedly.
Testing the button is useful, but it is not a substitute for inspection, electrical testing or fault finding by a competent electrician. Repeated tripping should not be treated as an annoyance to be bypassed. It is a protective device responding to a condition that needs investigation.
Avoid repeatedly resetting a device without identifying what changed. Unplugging appliances on the affected circuit can sometimes help narrow down whether a portable appliance is involved, but fixed wiring, accessories, moisture ingress and connected equipment can also be responsible. If there is any doubt, leave the circuit isolated and seek professional assistance.
A considered choice, not a box-ticking exercise
The best answer to RCD versus RCBO is usually guided by how you live in the property. Shared RCD protection can be suitable for simpler installations, while RCBOs offer greater fault isolation and are often the stronger choice where continuity, convenience and connected technology matter.
